What SfN 2026 means for CNS and pain vendor diligence 

For most exhibitors, the Society for Neuroscience annual meeting is a marketing moment. For the executives who sign preclinical budgets, SfN 2026 is closer to a compressed vendor diligence cycle: a few days in which you can meet, question, and eliminate contract research organizations that would otherwise take months of calls to assess. 

Neuroscience 2026 runs November 14–18, 2026 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C. Questions to ask before you meet a CRO at SfN 2026

1. Which assays are validated for my exact question? Not “we do electrophysiology” — ask for the specific readout (patch clamp on a defined ion channel, field potential recordings of synaptic plasticity, dorsal root ganglion recordings for pain targets) and the publication or internal validation behind it. Ask which journals the work appeared in. 

2. How do you decide between screening, confirmation, and translational validation? A good answer describes a decision tree and the throughput at each stage, not a single service. Screening compounds and confirming a mechanism in native tissue are different studies with different budgets. 

3. What data package would survive investor, partner, or regulatory scrutiny? Ask the team to describe, concretely, what a filing-grade dataset looks like for your target class. 

4. How do you handle a nonstandard design? Few CNS programs fit a template. Ask what changes when the protocol has to be rebuilt around your hypothesis. 

5. Which models, and why this one over the alternatives? Cell lines, primary neurons, acute brain slices and in vivo recordings answer different questions. The reasoning matters more than the list. 

6. Who designs and interprets the study? Ask whether PhD-level scientists are on the call — or whether you’ll receive traces without interpretation.
