Schizophrenia: chronic mental illness

Schizophrenia is a long-term mental condition belonging to the psychosis disease conditions. It causes a wide range of psychological symptoms: paranoia, dementia, hallucinations, delusions… Early diagnosis by a mental health care professional allow for a better medical treatment.

Even though the exact cause of schizophrenia remains unknown, it is believed that a combination of genetic and environmental factors can trigger the disease. Existing medical treatments include antipshychotic medicines as well as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy). Treating schizophrenia early usually allows patient to recover fully, but certain patients will experience relapse episodes.

Current antipsychotics work by blocking the effect of chemical dopamine on the brain, thus helping reduce the anxiety and aggression feeling experienced by patients.
